Getting Started

What exactly is Letters from Grownups?

Letters from Grownups (LFG) is a letter-writing system that makes it easier for adults and children to stay connected through the mail.

We've already written the letters, leaving spaces for you to add your own answers, stories, memories, and personality. Everything you need to exchange letters is included, so you can spend less time figuring out what to write and more time actually writing it.

What ages are the letters designed for?

Our letters are written for specific age groups so the subjects and language are appropriate for the children receiving them.

Available now: Ages 3–6 and 7–9.

Coming January 1, 2027: Ages 10–12, 13–15, and 16–18.

If you're interested in one of our upcoming age groups, you can request a release announcement here. We also encourage you to follow us on Instagram and Facebook.

If your child is approaching the upper end of an age range, we recommend purchasing the next age group. That way, the letters can grow with them over the coming months.

How do I know the letters are age-appropriate?

Our letters are developed for specific age groups, with careful attention to vocabulary, subjects, reading abilities, and how much writing a child can comfortably manage. We use detailed content guidelines when creating and reviewing every letter.

Read Thoughtfully Written, Carefully Considered to see how we approach age-appropriateness and content decisions.

How do I know Letters from Grownups is safe for my child?

We create our letters with child safety, age-appropriate boundaries, and caregiver awareness in mind. They never encourage children to keep secrets from parents or caregivers, disclose sensitive personal information, or take part in private arrangements that exclude the adults responsible for them.

Parents and caregivers know their children best, and we expect them to remain informed about the exchange. Read Thoughtfully Written, Carefully Considered for our full content guidelines.

Who can send letters to a child?

You don't have to be a parent or grandparent. Aunts, uncles, godparents, family friends, mentors, and other important grownups can and should participate.

The important thing is that the child's parents or caregivers know the exchange is happening and are included in the experience.

You also don't have to live far apart. There's something pretty wonderful about receiving a letter addressed to you, even when the person who sent it lives right down the street.

Do I need to be a good writer?

Absolutely not. That's one of the reasons Letters from Grownups exists.

We've taken care of the hard part by choosing the topics and partially writing the letters for you. You fill in the blanks with your own answers, opinions, and experiences. There's no need to rehearse, overthink, or come up with something clever. Sometimes one word is enough. Other times, you might want to write a few more.

Most adults can complete a letter in about 10–15 minutes. Letters from children typically take 5–10 minutes. Our beta testers rarely needed to sit down more than once to finish a letter, and we want to make it as easy as possible for the parent or caregiver helping the child, too. After all, we want you to get mail back!

If you get stuck, Ryder can help you figure out what to say. And as someone who scribbles and often has to ask herself, ‘What did I write on this grocery list?’ I can assure you that perfect handwriting isn't required. Although, please do try to make it legible!

The most important thing is that you take a little time to make the letters your own and actually get them into the mail. We want to help you go from being the adult who wants to stay in touch to the adult who does.

Can I start at any time of year, and do the letters have to go in order?

Absolutely! None of our letters are tied to holidays, seasons, or specific times of the year. You can start in January, July, or any month in between.

Each letter has its own subject, and you can complete them in whatever order you'd like. There's no official starting point, no calendar to follow, and no need to wait for a particular occasion. Just remember to send the matching child reply letter along with your letter so the child can write back about the same subject.

Ryder can help you keep track of which letter you sent when, so that's even easier. Whenever you're ready to start writing, we're ready for you.

Do you offer Letters from Grownups in other languages?

Not at this time. Our letters are currently available in English.

Do you offer different font sizes?

Not at this time. We don't currently offer alternative font-size editions.

Boxes, Subscriptions & Gifts

What will I receive with a six-month subscription?

You'll receive one complete letter exchange each month for six months. Each delivery includes an adult-to-child letter with its large envelope and Forever stamp, the matching child reply letter with its smaller envelope and Forever stamp, and one $2 bill.

Your first subscription package also includes a note from the founder and a QR code directing you to download Ryder. Subscription deliveries do not include a storage box. You may find an occasional extra surprise tucked into your mail, too.

What will I receive when I purchase the full-year box?

You'll receive all 12 complete letter exchanges at once, including adult and child letters, envelopes, postage for both directions, twelve $2 bills, a pen, and a note from the founder.

Every full-year box is hand-painted, so no two look quite alike. Curious about the $2 bills? Visit the $2 bill story on our Founder's Page.

How much does a six-month subscription cost?

A six-month subscription costs $132. You'll receive one complete letter exchange each month for six months, prepared and mailed directly to you.

How much does the full-year box cost?

The full-year box costs $125 and includes all 12 letter exchanges at once. It's the better value per exchange and includes the hand-painted box.

Should I buy the full-year box or a six-month subscription?

The full-year box gives you all 12 letter exchanges at once. The six-month subscription delivers one letter exchange to your mailbox each month for six months. Both include everything you need to send a letter to a child and receive one in return.

You can complete your letters all at once or a little at a time. What matters is finding a routine that helps you actually get them into the mail.

Some of our beta testers preferred receiving all 12 letters at once so they could write several, or even all of them, in one sitting. Others appreciated having a new letter arrive each month as a pattern interrupt that reminded them to sit down, write, and send their letter.

If saving money is your priority, the full-year box is the better value. You'll receive everything at once, and you can use Ryder to remind you when it's time to mail a letter you've already written.

If you prefer a more guided experience, the monthly subscription offers a concierge-level service. Each month, we'll prepare and mail your next letter package directly to you. That delivery becomes a reminder in itself, with the added enjoyment of finding something in your own mailbox (that's not an ad or a bill).

The subscription costs a little more to cover the additional preparation, handling, and shipping. You might also find an occasional surprise tucked inside, since we can't seem to stop buying stickers and swag... shhh (don't tell my husband).

And while monthly subscribers may receive a few extras along the way, full-year box customers aren't forgotten. We may send a little unexpected mail your way, too. (We want you to also experience some bonus joy at the mailbox.)

Ultimately, both options are designed to accomplish the same thing: help you build a lasting connection with a child through letters that actually get written and mailed.

You know your habits better than anyone. Would you rather have everything ready to go and let Ryder give you a nudge? Or would receiving something in your mailbox each month help you follow through? Choose the approach that works for you.

How do I order?

Go to Shop in the top navigation, or visit https://lettersfromgrownups.com/collections/all. Select the products you'd like, add them to your cart, and enter the shipping and billing details at checkout. That's it. Now LFG is on its way!

While we're rolling out our products, we also offer checks, Venmo and Zelle as payment options. Email info@lettersfromgrownups.com to arrange those transactions.

Can I give Letters from Grownups as a gift?

Absolutely! Order as you normally would, but enter the recipient's mailing address and your own billing information. We'll send the box or subscription directly to the adult receiving your gift.

We'll include a gift card identifying the person who sent it. Your recipient can visit lettersfromgrownups.com/gift to learn more and get started. We do not include prices or billing information in the package; purchase details go to your email address.

And don't worry about special gift packaging. We've already put plenty of thought into making the box itself something special to open.

Can I give Letters from Grownups anonymously?

No. We identify the gift sender so the recipient knows who sent it.

Will a gift recipient see the price or my billing information?

No. Pricing and billing information aren't included inside the gift packaging. Purchase details are sent to the buyer's email address.

Can I write to more than one child?

Of course! Ryder can help you keep track of correspondence with up to five children. You can make this as simple or elaborate as you want.

If two children are in the same age group, you could purchase one full-year box and divide its 12 exchanges between them. Each child would then have six exchanges, rather than 12.

If they're in different age groups, you'll need a box for each age group. Monthly subscriptions are purchased separately for each child.

One important mailing detail: Each child's letter needs its own envelope and postage. The included stamps are calculated for one letter per envelope, so please don't combine multiple letters into a single envelope.

Writing Letters & Getting Replies

What happens if I miss a month or fall behind?

Don't give up. Keep going. No one is perfect and the reality is that life gets complicated and busy. LFG is about building a relationship. Guilt need not apply. Just start where you left off.

If you're receiving monthly deliveries, you can write the letters when you're ready, even if you've accumulated a few. You might decide to send the letters twice a month to catch up, or you could just start now. (You might even give one as a gift for a friend to let them try LFG out! Hey, we're a small business and word of mouth helps us grow, so if you go this route, thanks for the help!)

And of course, you can also ask Ryder to help you get back into a routine with his reminders. The idea is to keep the exchange going, not turn it into another obligation.

How does a child write back if they need help?

Every adult letter has a corresponding child reply, with spaces for the child to fill in their own answers.

For younger children, parents or caregivers can read the letter aloud, write down the child's answers, or help them complete the blanks. Children learning to write may fill in some answers themselves and ask for help with others. Some children may prefer drawing or coloring, while others might want to fill in every blank themselves. Our ages 3–6 and 7–9 letters also include opportunities to color and draw.

And if the child wants to include something extra, wonderful! During beta testing, adults received additional drawings, stickers, and even watercolored doilies. We've even heard about early replies with just ‘Hi,’ a name, a scribble, and a short note from the caregiver. Those children were still asking whether the mail was for them.

There's no requirement for how neat, complete, or elaborate a child's reply needs to be. It's their letter. Let the child participate in whatever way works for them.

What is Ryder, and how does it help?

Meet Ryder, your little wingman for keeping in touch. (He's a little carrier pigeon who lives inside of an application you can download.)

Ryder is here to help when you need an idea for a letter, a reminder to send one, or a little assistance figuring out what to say to a child's parent or caregiver. He can also help you keep track of your correspondence with up to five children.

Ryder is especially useful if you have every intention of doing something but occasionally need a little extra help making it happen. Your first subscription delivery includes a QR code to help you download Ryder.

What if I don't get a letter back?

It happens. Children get busy, lose track of things, or need help from a caregiver to finish and mail a reply. It doesn't necessarily mean they aren't enjoying your letters.

You can keep the next letter light and welcoming, without making the child feel guilty about not replying. If a parent or caregiver is helping with the exchange, a friendly check-in may be useful, too. Our guide, What If I Don't Get a Reply?, has some practical ideas for keeping things going in a way that's comfortable for everyone.

Shipping & Orders

When will my order ship?

Our boxes are hand-assembled and shipped from Corpus Christi, Texas, twice a week. Monthly subscription packages are mailed on the 15th of each month, or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday.

Shipping is currently free for all boxes within the United States. We can also ship internationally, although additional charges apply. Please contact us before purchasing so we can help you with the details: info@lettersfromgrownups.com.

How do I change an order I have already placed?

Email info@lettersfromgrownups.com with your name, your recipient's name, the shipping address, and any other relevant details. Please allow me 1–3 business days to reply. I'll help the best I can.

Once an order has shipped, changes are not possible. Our cancellation and refund policies still apply.

Will I receive tracking information?

Yes, for boxes shipped with USPS tracking. We'll send the tracking number to your email address. If you don't see it, check your spam folder and verify that the message really came from Letters from Grownups before following a link.

Individual monthly subscription letter packages are not tracked. That's why accurate return addresses are important: undeliverable letters can be returned to the sender.

How do I update a mailing address?

If you're receiving a subscription and move, email info@lettersfromgrownups.com with your order number, name, previous address, and new address. Please give us as much notice as you can so future monthly packages can reach you.

Changing your address with USPS does not automatically notify Letters from Grownups. And because you write the addresses on the letters you exchange with the child, you're also responsible for updating your own and the child's mailing addresses on those envelopes.

I didn't receive my subscription letter this month. What should I do?

Monthly subscription letters are mailed on the 15th, or the next business day when the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday. If you haven't received yours by the 1st of the following month (or the next business day), email info@lettersfromgrownups.com and we'll send another.

We can provide a maximum of two replacement subscription letters.

What if something is missing, damaged, or lost?

We're a small business, and every box is assembled with care. If something arrives damaged or an item is missing, email info@lettersfromgrownups.com. We'll work with you directly to see what we can do.

If a shipment appears lost, we'll work with USPS to investigate and keep you updated by email. All sales are final, subject to the gift-cancellation exception noted in our subscription policy.

Subscriptions, Renewals & Help

Can I change or cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are six-month commitments, and all sales are final except for the gift-cancellation exception described below. A subscription cannot be paused, skipped, changed to another plan, or cancelled for a refund during the six-month period.

Subscriptions do not automatically renew. You won't be charged for another six months unless you make a new purchase.

If someone gifted me a subscription, can I cancel it?

If you received a subscription as a gift and no longer wish to participate, please speak with the person who purchased it. We understand that may be a delicate conversation, and we recommend handling it personally.

A gift purchaser may request a cancellation within two days of purchase. A $25 restocking fee applies. After that two-day window, the subscription is not refundable. Please email info@lettersfromgrownups.com to request an eligible cancellation.

What happens when my six-month subscription ends?

It ends after six monthly deliveries and does not automatically renew. You won't be charged again unless you place a new order.

Ryder will begin reminding you 60 days before your subscription ends, so you can decide whether to order another subscription or switch to a full-year box.

How do I reactivate a subscription?

We're so excited you enjoyed LFG and want to start again! Simply visit Shop, choose a new subscription, and complete your purchase. We'll get it on its way.

How can I get help with an order or subscription?

Email us at info@lettersfromgrownups.com. Whether you're having trouble with an order, need to update a subscription address, or have a question we haven't answered here, that's the best way to reach us.
